Has anyone else experienced this with Windows 98? If so, how did you rectify this to complete the installation successfully?

I am plagued by an inability to get the drivers functional. I am able to boot the VM now, but that is where the fun stops. I know how much you like pitching other emulators, but running Windows 9x in VMware works pretty darn well, even with sound, file drag&drop, and high resolution graphics. I used CloneZilla to create an image and then restored that image into a blank VM in Player. Dont use VMware if you want to have a virtual machine of Windows 98 and/or 98 SE. The only thing I was able to dig up on this issue was the following repair ticket, whose outcome is similar to my circumstances (but with no solution): I have a windows 98 PC that I need to create a virtual machine from. Both the initial fdisk and format of the virtual C: drive went as expected. If you have further questions on Windows, please do not hesitate to let us know. When the scan is finished, locate MS Windows 98 SE VMWare Image Downloader3687i1124260933il3071101.exe in the scan result and tick the checkbox next to the MS Windows 98 SE VMWare Image Downloader3687i1124260933il3071101.exe file.Do not check any other file for removal unless you are 100 sure you want to delete it. I know you can give vmware access to physical hardware but that might not be ideal (unless you dont mind moving the old 98 hdd into your new pc).

How to prepare to upgrade Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP. You cant use ImgBurn to take (or build) an image of your Win 98 machines hard drive so it can be used as a bootable ISO, things dont work like that. I would suggest you to upgrade to Windows XP Operating System. Virtual machine's RAM was set at 128 MB, video RAM at 4 MB, HD size at 2 GB (expanding). The support for Windows 98 has been ended. After that error message, you are forced to hard reset the virtual OS, only to return to the same disappearing window and aborted status. (Optional) You can use the Network icon in the Windows 98 Control Panel to view or change network settings.
Generally, you do not need to change the Ethernet adapters default settings.

Restarting in Safe Mode does not allow a user to progress very far, as the OS informs the user that normal mode is required to identify the plug and play hardware. Windows 98 automatically detects an AMD PCNET (PCI-ISA) family Ethernet adapter and prompts the Windows 98 CD-ROM to install drivers. Immediately following this, the entire window containing the virtual OS closes itself, with its status in Virtualbox's main window now as "Aborted". The Windows 98 splash screen appears for several seconds, as expected. The problems begin after the virtual machine reboots after this point. The system files installed (what seemed to be) correctly, the virtual OS rebooted as expected during the process (the stage to enter your name and company, CD key, etc.). hopefully someone has a little insight concerning this issue, as I've hit a brick wall and haven't come up with many search results explaining this.Īfter fussing with Virtualbox on Ubuntu 8.04 (2.6.24-21-generic) for a while, I managed to nearly complete an installation of Windows 98 SE (using a boot disk image with an original non-bootable 98 SE CD). I've tried a bunch of different things but nothing seems to be working. My first post on this forum. Is there a step I missed somewhere? Please let me know what it is that I'm supposed to do. Of the tutorials are giving clear instructions on how to run pc games from the CD-Rom. I feel like I am missing something but I can't figure out what it is. I know it is possible to run CD-Rom discs on a virtual PC because I've seen in done in videos before. Overall, the disc isn't behaving like it should after I installed it. This includes either not having sound in the game or the sound in the game cutting inĪnd out. When I try and run one of my discs from my disc drives, it brings up the installation and takes me through it, but when I try running the game, it doesn't work properly. I was successfully able to complete the setup for Windows 98 on Virtualbox 6.1 following a tutorial on Youtube.
